Title:
HLCX 3841
Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses W. 2nd St. as it works the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 27 Mar. '25. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, stands to the left. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

HLCX 1070
Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) locomotive momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it works the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 27 Mar. '25. The former C&NW freight house is partially visible on the left. The freight house is dwarfed by the enginehouse built by the FV&LS a couple of years ago. HLCX 3880 is parked in front of the enginehouse. Miller Electric stands to the right.

HLCX 1070
Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses N. Lynndale Dr./Hwy. A as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 27 March 2025. Train was headed for New London. The signals were not functioning, so a crewmember had to flag the crossing. The tracks and the street form part of the often ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton (this side of the tracks) and the Town of Grand Chute (far side of the tracks). On the far side of the tracks, Appleton is on the left side of N. Lynndale and the Town of Grand Chute is on the right side.

Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train approaches Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Greenville, WI, on 27 Mar. ‘25. Train was headed for New London. The train is passing the former site of the recently demolished United Cooperative (formerly Greenville Co-op), N1868 Municipal Dr. Founded as Greenville Cooperative in 1931, it merged with United Cooperative in 2017. A massive new facility is nearing completion along the FV&LS rails at Center Valley, WI (about 8 miles to the northeast, as the crow flies).

HLCX 1070
Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Hortonville, WI, on 27 Mar. ‘25. Train was headed for New London. The train is about to pass the historic Schwebs’ Hotel, built across the tracks from the depot in 1877. It was later renamed Hotel Jungmann, later Hotel Hoffman. It is currently home to the Black Otter Supper Club, 503 S. Nash St. I have not eaten there myself, but everyone I know who has says it is great. One of these days I will have to check it out for myself.

Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses the Embarrass River via the former CN, historically GB&W, bridge as it heads west with 9 cars at New London, Waupaca Co., WI, on 27 Mar. ‘25. Most of New London is in Waupaca Co., but part of it is in Outagamie Co. I did not spot a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, this steel stringer bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., Milwaukee, WI, in 1915.

GTW 5855 and WC 15 Caboose
Description:
A CN train parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI, on 13 Apr. '25. Train was headed for Oshkosh and its consist included WC 15 caboose (the former AC 9602). Snells, also formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. Some modern maps don't even include the dot. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train. I had not intended to chase trains today. However, when I saw a train with a caboose departing the yard at Neenah, I was obligated to give chase.

CN 9515 and WC 15 Caboose at C&NW Oshkosh Depot
Description:
A CN train parallels Broad St. and passes the depot as it heads north with four cars and a caboose via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI, on 18 May '25. Consist included WC 15, the former AC 9602. The former C&NW depot was built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000. The depot was more ornate when it opened on 1 Dec. ’84, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care.

CN 9515
Description:
A CN train slows to pause at Harrison St. as it heads north with five cars and a caboose via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI, on 18 May '25. Consist included WC 15, the former AC 9602. They stopped to throw the turnout (just out-of-frame to the right) to enter an industrial park on the north end of Oshkosh. I thought they were going to serve a customer, but it seems like they were just clearing the main line for an approaching south bound train. The CN main line transitions from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails here at Harrison St. Tower CF once stood out-of-frame to the right, where it guarded a diamond where a C&NW branch left their main line, crossed the SOO, and headed west. I wouldn't have shot them here if I knew they were going to stop to throw the turnout right in front of me. I don't like to be in their face.

CN 9515
Description:
A CN train momentarily fouls E. Snell Rd. as it heads northeast with five cars and a caboose via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 18 May '25. The current border between the City of Oshkosh and the Town of Oshkosh is ridiculously convoluted in this area. The current GIS suggests that 3/4 of the locomotive is in a pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh, but the near right 1/4 might be in the City of Oshkosh. The train stopped to throw the turnout (out-of-frame to the left) to enter an industrial spur for a couple of customers. Of course I got to watch a fancy SUV catch a little air as it sped through the crossing as the gates were coming down.
